| The volunteers of the Oysterponds
Historical Society are the heart of the Museum. Becoming an OHS
volunteer is an excellent way to learn more about our local
history and to contribute to the Society's mission to preserve
and teach about the history of Orient and East Marion. If you
would like to volunteer your time, the following opportunities
are currently available:

Collections Care Aide
Learn about caring for historic collections and assist staff
in cleaning artifacts. Help with special projects in the museum
that involve handling, cataloguing and/or researching
collections. Minimum time commitment: 2-3 hours per month.
Training provided.
Clerical Assistant
Be part of the OHS team. Multi-tasking, phone and basic office
skills desired. Training and support provided. Minimum time
commitment: 2-3 hours per month.
Docent
Strengthen your communications skills and be the “public face”
of the museum welcoming visitors, conducting tours, providing
information and interpretation of exhibitions and historic
buildings on OHS campus. Must enjoy talking with people of all
ages and have an interest in history. Training, support and
resources are provided. Museum exhibitions are open Thursday,
Saturday and Sunday from 2-5PM, July- Sept. Docents are asked to
volunteer at least two afternoons per month.
Gardener
Help maintain and improve the gardens of the OHS campus from
April through October. Tend gardens and flower boxes on OHS
campus, acquire new additions, remove dead and out of season
plants. Knowledge of plants preferred, but not required. OJT
Minimum time commitment of 1 hour per week during summer months.
Display Case Assistant
Combine your artistic eye with your interest in history and
children. Help select materials from the OHS collection which
support the school curriculum at Oysterponds School and
participate in creating six displays during the school year.
Time commitment is 4-6 hours per display. Training and support
provided.
Graphic Artist
Are you a professional graphic artist or just have an artistic
eye? Are you proficient with Photoshop or Publisher? We
consistently have a variety of projects available. Flexible
schedule and hours.
Grants Writer
Are you a good writer who understands the project process
and has strong research skills? If so, you are needed on the OHS
grants writing team. The main tasks include preparing and
writing documents for submission, proofreading, submitting to
funding sources and follow-up.
Regular Maintenance —Tuesday Crew
Join the dynamic team of jacks-of-all trades who work in and
around the OHS buildings each Tuesday. Simple carpentry—no
special skills required.
Writer
Like seeing your words in print? OHS needs good writers for
diverse projects including newsletters, brochures. Flexible
schedule.
Skilled Maintenance
Do you have a background in carpentry, plumbing, electrical?
OHS needs skilled maintenance on an as needed basis. Flexible
schedule.
Events Manager
Like to plan parties and see that they come off
successfully? Work with a team to brainstorm events ideas,
coordinate venues, manage caterers, schedule volunteers.
Training and support provided. Immediate opportunities
available.
Summer Children’s Activity Assistant
Work with other assistants and 7-12 year olds in an informal
activity setting. Activity will relate to the summer
exhibitions. 1-3 summer Saturday mornings for 2 hours. Training
provided.
Tour Guides for Summer Children’s Programs
See the summer exhibits through a child’s eye. Experience
with elementary school age children and creative ideas for
engaging them a plus. Three summer Saturday mornings for one
hour. Training and support provided.
Illustrator, Photographer for Education
Enliven historical materials for the school display case and
document educational activities. Support available. Flexible
time commitment.
